Developing Pre-Service Teachers’ Technological Pedagogical and Content Knowledge (TPACK) for Teaching Mathematics with the Geometer’s Sketchpad (GSP) Through Lesson Study (LS)
Chew & Lim (2013) in
their journal article entitle Developing Pre-Service Teachers’ Technological
Pedagogical and Content Knowledge (TPACK) for Teaching Mathematics with the
Geometer’s Sketchpad (GSP) Through Lesson Study (LS) stated that there are only
26% from 151 total teachers in Malaysia who following the GSP course and only
2% who applying GSP in their teaching and learning activities. GPS itself is a software
for constructing and investigating mathematical objects such as
geometry, algebra, statistic and so on which can help students to learning math
in easier way. In the other hands, Lesson Study is selected as one of potential
ways to improve teachers’ learning and supporting to grow professionally
because LS conducted by a small group of teachers meet at stipulate time to
plan and observe their lesson, discuss and revise their observation
collaboratively.
To develop and also to examine whether there is a
significant difference in the pre-service secondary teachers’ TPACK for
teaching mathematics with GSP after engaging in LS which is into the
mathematics course during first semester of the 2011/2012 academic session in a
Malaysian Public University, Chew & Lim are involving 46 pre-service
teachers as participants and employing a one-group pre-test – post-test design as
their research method and in order to get the data the applying survey and
questionnaire which contain several demographic data and 7 subscale which 47
self-report items using a five-point Likert scale. After calculating and
analyzing the data, can be concluded that TPACK for teaching mathematics with
GSP had improved significantly after engaging LS. The difference between the
mean score are statistically significant for all the subscales and overall
TPACK as p < 0.5. this study also shown that LS can help the pre-service
secondary teachers to develop their skill in TPACK for teaching mathematics
with GSP.
That's good, I hope teachers are more aware about TPACK.
